Fujifilm GF 20–35 mm f4 — The perfect lens for the GFX System arrived!
It’s been some days since I wrote a few words here, so let’s go! So, as many of you know, the Fujifilm GF 20–35 mm f4 lens got released by Fujifilm in September. This was my mostly anticipated release this year. The GFX System offer superb image quality, but it lacked a wide zoom lens till September.
On the X-System, I really love the 10–24 mm f4 lens, it’s so versatile to use. Landscape and architecture are a dream to capture with this lens, and I hoped Fujifilm will one day release a similar lens for the GFX System. Now, a few months after the release, I finally got the 20–35 mm f4 for my camera bag. Last weekend I headed to the alps and finally shot some sample photos with it. So here are my first initial takeaways:
Overview
The Fujifilm GF 20–35 mm F4 R WR is an ultra-wide-angle medium format lens that offers an effective focal length range of 16–28 mm in 35 mm format.
Key features of this compact lens include a constant F4 open aperture throughout the zoom range, a weight of only 725g, and the use of the 82 mm filter size.
The lens barrel is weather sealed in 12 places to provide dust and weather resistance, as well as the ability to operate in temperatures as low as -10°C. The front lens element is fluorine coated to repel water and provide protection from stains.
Image Quality
At a first glance, the Image Quality is Fujifilm like, which means absolutely superb. Distortion looks good to me? But I’m not an architecture photographer, so if someone can share their insights on what to look for, I would be very thankful. I also can’t compare it to the 23 mm f4 though, since I never got my hands on one. But here are some sample pictures:
Build Quality & Ergonomics
The lens is weather sealed, so when attached to a GF body, it performs pretty flawlessly under harsh conditions. In addition, the lens is surprisingly small and feels very balanced on the Fujifilm GFX 100s. It also has an internal zoom (like the 10–24 mm on the X-System), so it doesn’t get very big. It also has the typical Fujifilm Aperture Ring, which has the right resistance for good usage.
Autofocus
AF Performance is more than enough and works totally fine with the GFX100s. My main use for this lens is landscape and a bit of architecture, so it doesn’t need to be crazy fast. But also, more testing needs to be done.
Conclusio
Well, this will be definitely one of my favorite lenses for the GFX System. It’s wide and weather resistant, has good image & build quality. What more can you wish for? Well actually I hoped, that it would be a 20–45 mm f4 lens, but you can’t have everything right? So far I’m pretty happy with it, but let’s see, how it works in future projects.
